CBJ Scene: Queen City Brewers Festival Showcases Charlotte Talent

Charlotte has quite a craft-beer community brewing, as was showcased Saturday night at the Neighborhood Theatre at the Queen City Brewers Festival.

About 10 Charlotte-area breweries were represented, from the recently opened NoDa Brewing Co. to Hops Grill & Brewery of Matthews.

“There’s a void in Charlotte,” event organizer Nils Weldy says of the city’s fledgling craft-beer scene. But implants from other cities are beginning to fill the space, he says, and Charlotteans are drinking it up.

The event’s $20 admission bought beer-lovers a commemorative sampling glass and unlimited tastings for a three-hour session.

Three hundred tickets were sold for each of two tasting sessions. Vendors, sponsors and brewers pushed the attendance for each session to around 450.

The event also featured local artists and live music by Super Reggae Man, also known as Jimmy Jams of Jah Creations, and the Lovell Bradford Trio. Eateries Pizza Peel and Ernie’s BBQ were on hand for those who had a taste for more than beer.

Proceeds from the event were donated to Partners for Parks, a nonprofit organization that promotes the creation and preservation of parks, greenways and open spaces in Mecklenburg County.
